Entry 1
Item 1: Poem

Love and friendship
By Emily Bronté
Love is like the wild rose- briar
Friendship like the holly- tree
The holly is dark when the rose- briar blooms
But which will bloom most constantly?

The wild rose- briar is sweet in spring,
Its summer blossoms scent the air;
Yet wait till winter comes again
And who will call the wild- briar fair?

Then scorn the silly rose- wreath now
And deck three with the holly’s sheen,
That when December blights thy brow
He may still leave thy garland green.

Rhetorical devices:
* Rhyme: tree- constantly, air- fair, now- brow, sheen- green.
* Simile: love- wild rose briar, friendship- holly tree (line1,2)
* Metaphor: wild rose briar (love), holly tree (friendship)
* Metonymy: December (winter, frosty)

Message:
Love is so beautiful & sweet but it does not last forever. By contrast, friendship is so simple and plain. Moreover, friends always stand by us whenever we have trouble or be in serious difficulties. Love comes and goes but friendship always stays!

Item 2: Song
 CUPPY CAKE
(Lyrics and music by Judianna and Buddy Castle)
                    You’re my honeybunch, sugar plum
                    Pumpy umpy umkin
                    You’re my sweetie pie
You’re my cuppy cake, gumdrop, snoogums boogums
You’re the apple of my eyes.

And I love you so and I want you to know
That I’ll always be right here
And I love to sing sweet songs to you
                    Because you are so dear!

* This song is about all of the sweet names the mom and dad called Judianna when she was a little and it’s also all the sweet names that she calls her daughter- Amy.

Rhetorical devices:
* Simile: You (the baby) with honeybunch, sugar plum, pumpkin, pie, cuppy cake, gumdrop, snoogums, boogums.
* Metaphor: You (the baby) – apple of my (the mother’s) eyes.

* Assonance: Pumpy umpy umkin (pumpkin)

Message:
This song is a small gift that expresses the mother’s love, compassion and protection to her little daughter.

Item 3: Picture

Rhetorical devices:
* Paradox: the man in picture is disabled and he has no legs. However, he wrote that “I’ll kick you in the face”.

Message:
The picture shows optimism and joviality of the disabled man. He wrote this plate to make people pay attention to him and give him some money.

  2. I really like your all 3 items :D. I just want to add 1 rhetorical device in the 1st item, that is rhetorical question: "But which will bloom most constantly?", "And who will call the wild- briar fair?"

  4. Hi Quynh Anh. I have the same opinion with Kim Anh and Thuy. However, i want to add 1 rhetorical device in item 2. It is Repetition: " You're...." and " And I love you". I really like item 1 like Thuy. Cheer ^^
