Argument Structure and Fallacies

ITEM 1

Gunthar is the father of Connan. They live on a small island and in their culture women are treated as property to be exchanged at will by men.

Connan: "You know father, when I was going to school in the United States I saw that American women are not treated as property. In fact, I read a book by this person named Mill in which he argued for women's rights."
Gunthar: "So, what is your point son?"
Connan: "Well, I think that it might be wrong to trade my sisters for cattle. They are human beings and should have a right to be masters of their own fate."
Gunthar: "What a strange and new-fangled notion you picked up in America. That country must be even more barbaric then I imagined. Now think about this son. We have been trading women for cattle for as long as our people have lived on this island. It is a tradition that goes back into the mists of time. "
Connan: "But I still think there is something wrong with it."
Gunthar: "Nonsense my boy. A tradition this old must be endorsed by the gods and must be right."

-          Type of argument structures and fallacies: Fallacies of relevance ( Appeal to traditions)

-          Analysis: Appeal to Tradition is a fallacy that something is better or correct simply because it is older, traditional. In this sample, according to Connan’s father, the tradition that women are treated as property to be exchanged at will by men is an old one, so this tradition is always right. Of course, it is a fallacy, because there are still some traditions that are wrong.

-          The type of argument structures and fallacies: Invalidity of the argument (Denying the antecedent)

-          Analysis:

Nhà hành chính học là người nắm vững khoa học quản lý.

Ông A không phải là nhà hành chính học.

Ông A không phải là người nắm vững khoa học quản lý.

The structure:

If A, then B

Not A

Therefore not B

The inference is wrong. Because in this case, B still happens if there is not A. Therefore this argument is invalid.

                             Đặc cách cho sỹ tử đạp xe 300km vào đại học

Bộ trưởng Quốc phòng Phùng Quang Thanh vừa ký quyết định tuyển bổ sung Ngô Văn Thuận - thí sinh đạp xe 300 km từ Nghệ An ra Hà Nội thi đại học vào trường Sĩ quan Tăng - Thiết giáp.

Trong kỳ tuyển sinh đại học, cao đẳng vừa qua, Thuận một mình đạp xe từ Yên Thành (Nghệ An) ra Hà Nội thi đại học với vẻn vẹn chỉ 30.000 đồng trong túi. Suốt hành trình đó, cậu bạn chỉ ăn bánh mì không và uống nước mang từ nhà đi. May mắn trong những ngày thi tại Thạch Thất (Hà Nội), Thuận được một gia đình tốt bụng cưu mang ăn, ở và chở đi thi.

Sau khi trường Sĩ quan Lục quân 1 công bố điểm chuẩn là 16,5, Thuận rất tiếc vì không đủ điểm đỗ (Thuận thi được 13 điểm, cộng điểm khu vực là 14 điểm). Nhưng cậu bạn vẫn không nản mà quyết tâm vào Nam vừa học vừa làm để tiết kiệm tiền, năm sau tiếp tục theo đuổi ước mơ của mình.

Được đặc cách vào trường Sĩ quan Tăng - Thiết giáp là một tin vui lớn, đền đáp xứng đáng cho những nỗ lực của cậu học trò nghèo. Theo quyết định này, Thuận sẽ được Hiệu trưởng trường này gửi thông báo nhập học đại học cấp phân đội theo quy định

-          The type of argument structure and Fallacies: Irrelevant conclusion

-          Analysis: The fact that the poor student named Thuan rode 300km from Nghe An to Ha Noi to take part in the entrance exam to University of tank and military equipment. After that, he failed the exam, but admiring for the good example of Thuan’s fortitude, the minister of the national defense Mr. Phung Quang Thanh decided to give Thuan a chance to enter that university. It is clear that entering the university depends on the result of the entrance exam, not depends on the fortitude of the student. Therefore the decision of Mr. Phung Quang Thanh is irrelevant.
