NGUYỄN ANH TUẤN

ENTRY 3
Identifying Bias
Item 1:

School District in North Carolina Accused of Discrimination

-          + Discrimination
-        +  Analysis: The picture is a self-explanatory illustration for discrimination in a high school. Victims suffering this unfairness are Latino students (people of Latin American extraction). A student once was scolded by a teacher there: “Get back to your own country”.

ITEM 2:

-             +  Stereotype
+  Analysis: The short story with the title “ Đàn ông tốt đi đâu hết cả rồi” is about a young woman who had once family break-ups. The first husband, initially loved her so much, betrayed her by extramarital fairs, then. To liberate herself, she split up the husband, and found new joy with another older lover. Nonetheless, the new husband was so selfish and tight-fisted that she went away one more time. Consequently, she disbelieved in most men, most husbands: “all men are the same, they are bad”.

-            Sexism
-          Analysis: The title denotes that sexism in family has become actions of homicide. The family above over-evaluates value of boys and disregards daughters. No boys, having nothing.

  1. Dear Tuan,
item 1 is very clear that it's dicrimination, so i agree with u. however, i think item 2 is not stereotype. According to your, it have to be assumption.
item 3: i think maybe it is discrimination.

    1. Yep, item 2 is maybe prejudice as Ms Khue said below.
Item 3, no need to say "discrimination". But the word "sexism" is per se to express sexual discrimination. Hence, "sexism" is relevant.

  2. i think the item 2 is prejudice. As you stated, the woman no longer believes in men after her two marriage broke down. So she thinks that men are no good, "there is no good man left". This is a negative judgment, not the mental image of a group of person.

  3. I agree with Khuê. I think item 2 is prejudice. Her thought that: "all men are the same, they are bad" is her negative opinion about men in general.
