Entry 3: Identifying bias
Item1: cartoon

http://www.cartoonstock.com/directory/s/sex_discrimination.asp
Identifying bias: gender discrimination
Analysis: The picture tells us about
sexism in the workplace. You can see the line “you are simple not the right man
for this job” in the picture, the man means female isn’t able to do the job
because they just are normal and simple, but if being right man, they can get
it easily.
Item 2: Quote
“San
Franciscans are gay.”
Identifying bias: Stereotype
Analysis: This statement shows that the
author’s opinion is San Franciscans are gay. He only uses a mental image of a
group is that San Franciscans without regard to individual differences and give
a conclusion hurriedly. Actually, among major US cities, San
Francisco has the largest percentage of gay, lesbian and bisexual
residents, but not all.
Item3:
Poster

Identifying bias: Emotive language
Analysis: The poster has two bold line stretching
across the page uses emotive language to draw the reader’s attention is that
“Petrol hits £6 a gallon” which is much more stressed than another subheadings
because it is main headline to attract readers for petrol price hikes.
Moreover, a subheading also adds to this emotive language “Fury as pump prices
reach record high”, the word “furry” expresses the emphasize of pump prices.
