- Analyze:
De Gia Phat produces beautiful glass
If using beautiful glass, your house
will be luxurious house
If
using De Gia Phat glass, you will have a luxurious house.
=> structure fallacy: denying the
antecedent
A house may be luxurious without using
De Gia Phat glass.
ITEM 2:
After 151 Years, Baptist Baylor Kicks
Up Its Heels, Just a Little
[…]
But not closely enough for Miles Seaborn,
president of the Southern Baptists of Texas and pastor at Birchman
Baptist Church
in Fort Worth .
"Who's going to be the gyration inspector?" he asked. "Are they
going to have a committee or is the president going to do it?"
Look at what happened to other colleges
and universities with their roots in divinity, Mr. Seaborn said, pointing to
Harvard and Yale. "Baylor has been on the slippery slope for some time,
and this is just one more slip," he said. "Wherever modern dancing
is, there is alcohol and promiscuousness." […]

ð
The slippery slope fallacy.
Context: At Baylor
University in Waco , Texas ,
the college’s new president, Robert B. Sloan, over turned the 151 years – old
ban on dancing, although he promised that dancing would be closely supervised
and the music carefully chosen. The decision was made in 1995 after years of discussion.
Miles Seaborn, president of the Southern Baptist in Texas .
Analyze:
- Mr Seaborn’s speech is a
slippery slope, because his speech has no reason to give next conclusions.
"Who's going to
be the gyration inspector?"
Ê"Are they going to have a committee
or is the president going to do it?"
ÊWhat they did – what happened to other
colleges and universities with their roots in divinity.
Ê"Baylor has been on the slippery
slope for some time, and this is just one more slip,"
If there is a gyration inspector,
he may choose another ways besides they are going to have a committee and the
president is going to do it. In addition, Baylor has been on the slippery slope
for some time because of a lot of reasons not only looking at what happened to
other colleges and universities with their roots in divinity.
- Hasty generalization: "Wherever
modern dancing is, there is alcohol and promiscuousness”.
He considered that every place is the same.
Therefore, if a place has modern dancing, there is alcohol and promiscuousness.
He gave the conclusion that "Wherever modern dancing is, there is alcohol
and promiscuousness."
ITEM 3:
The sequence of events--Hiroshima , Nagasaki ,
surrender offer--is striking. Could it be that pure coincidence has clouded our
understanding of the surrender for half a century? Indeed it could. By
themselves, the dates prove nothing. In the decades since, Hiroshima has had to carry the metaphorical
weight of the Cold War. It is a heavy load for one unfortunate Japanese seaport
to bear.

In item 2, I'm not clear about slippery slope because you don't point out the hidden premises.
Trả lờiXóahi, Thuy, in item 1, i think you should point out the the structure of the fallacy type: denying the antecedent : If A, then B
Trả lờiXóanot A
______________
Therefore, not B
and explain the reasons for this fallacy type to make ur analysis more clearly.
in my opinion, you should focus more on the item to illustrate why the item 2 is slip slope.
Trả lờiXóaYeah, the structure of the fallacy in the item 1 needs pointed.
