Identifying Bias

Item 1


-          Stereotype.

-          Analysis:

Ø Semaphore Flag is the system for conveying information at a distance by means of visual signals with hand-held flags, rods, disks, paddles. Semaphores were adopted and widely used in the maritime world in the 19th century. Many Jews people use semaphore flag. Actually, not all people who hold semaphore in their hands are the Jews.

Ø Taxidermy is the art of preparing, stuffing, and mounting the skins of animals (especially vertebrates) for display (e.g. as hunting trophies) or for other sources of study. Many black girls are taxidermist, but not all of black girls are taxidermist.

Ø The Cherokee are a Native American people historically settled in the Southeastern United States. Puppets show the history, lifestyle and religious practice of the Cherokee. But not all people with the puppets are the Cherokee.

Ø Nuclear energy helps to develop the industry a lot, but it is dangerous and costly. Nuclear testing is very popular in Spain. But not all people who test nuclear energy are Spaniard.

-          Prejudice

-          Analysis: The woman is much smaller than two big men and she stands behind them. The comic expresses negative attitude toward women. Women in working places are appreciated lowly compared with men.


Item 3




-          Discrimination.

-          Analysis: The woman in this photo is too old to apply for a job. This photo shows a popular phenomenon in modern society that is the age discrimination.

  1. Hi Hien,
    - In my opinion your item 3 is ok. However, in the item 1, there is the word "stereotype" in your picture ^^ => so I think that you should choose another one which you can identify bias by yourself. In item 2, I think it is sexism. I can see two men look each other => maybe they are compete in work and the woman is behind and just looks at them
