Identifying Bias

• ITEM 1:

- Type of bias: Stereotype

- Analysis: In this picture, it is a man with moustache who wears a beret, a striped shirt and a craft. He holds  many baguettes and a glass of wine. This is a typical image of French man. French men usually have moustache. A beret, a striped shirt and a craft are their common kinds of costume. They also like eating baguette and drinking wine. 

• ITEM 2: 

- Type of bias: Discrimination

- Analysis: In this picture, it can be seen that old people are divided into locals and immigrants. The immigrants have to go out. Only locals are served. It is national origin discrimination.

• ITEM 3:

Taxi - Thủ phạm gây tắc đường

Đội quân taxi ở hai thành phố lớn Hà Nội và TP Hồ Chí Minh hiện nay có thể nói đông như "kiến cỏ". Lưu thông trên đường, nhìn trước nhìn sau chi chít các loại biển hiệu hãng taxi. Một trong những kẻ tội đồ "đầu vụ" gây ra vụ tắc đường trầm trọng ở hai thành phố lớn hiện nay đích thị là taxi, một đối tượng mà lâu nay hoạt động nở rộ như nấm mọc sau mưa theo nhu cầu của cuộc sống hiện đại.

- Type of bias: Emotive language and scapegoating

- Analysis: 

 + Emotive language: In a small part of the article " Taxi - Thủ phạm gây tắc đường", the journalist uses many emotive words. The words "đông như kiến cỏ", "chi chít", "nở rộ như nấm mọc sau mưa" make a strong impression on reader about the high density of taxi in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Besides, the words "kẻ tội đồ đầu vụ", " trầm trọng", "đích thị" are used to emphasize and cause people to think that it is taxi which causes serious traffic jam in two big cities.

 + Scapegoating: "Một trong những kẻ tội đồ "đầu vụ" gây ra vụ tắc đường trầm trọng ở hai thành phố lớn hiện nay đích thị là taxi" => the journalist blame taxi for traffic jam in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
