Entry 3
Identifying Bias

* Item1:  Tôi yêu Thanh Hóa

 Comment in the clip:

Ø Type of bias: Prejudice, Stereotype
Ø Analysis:
- Prejudice: At first, they smile and talk very friendly and in a fun way. However, the girl knows that the boy comes from Thanh Hoa after seeing his Student Profile, she shows despising attitude with a contemptuous look at him. Moreover, prejudice is also expressed in some others' comments underlined.
- Stereotype: In fact, we can find that Thanh Hoa people always be disregardful and contemptuous because most people believe that Thanh Hoa people “eat pennywort, break rails”. It means that they are very stingy, wise and bad. And so does the girl.

* Item 2:

Ø Type of bias: Discrimination
Ø Analysis: In this picture, there is a billboard with some lines: “no Blacks, no Jews, no Dogs, no Irish and all welcome!” It is clear that there is a racial discrimination between others and Blacks, Irish, Jews. All are welcomed except Blacks, Irish, Jews and Dogs. Moreover, the Blacks, Jews and Irish are equated with dogs. It proves that racial discrimination is more obvious.

* Item 3:

St. Petersburg Times (Florida)
3/25/2003
Dar Al-Hayat
4/1/2003
The Red Cross, one of the few aid groups with staff operating in Iraq, hopes to negotiate access to the main power station, which is said to be under control of U.S.-led coalition forces. But neither local staff nor specialists in neighboring Kuwait have been cleared to go because of continued clashes.
Iraq said its troops were battling U.S.-led invasion forces inside Nassiriya and on the city's outskirts on Tuesday and inflicting heavy casualties.

Ø Type of bias: Emotive language
Ø Analysis: With the same issue but it is expressed by two articles in the differences in word choice. The phrase “coalition forces” means “lực lượng liên quân” and “invasion forces” means “lực lượng xâm lược”. They seem quite different meaning but they all referred to U.S forces. Moreover, there is a remarkable difference in two words: “ battle”(đấu tranh) and “negotiate”(đàm phán). Here, the author of Dar Al-Hayat wants to strongly emphasize on the serious clash between Iraq and U.S. It isn’t only negotiated but battled.

  1. Hi Nguyet,
    I have some comments about your entry
    - First, i think your item 2 and 3 are good ^_^
    - However, I think that in item 2, prejudice should be discrimination (prejudice in action) because the girl contemptuously looks at the boy coming from Thanh Hoa. I think it is also a negative action. About stereotype, in my opinion, it should be prejuidce because as you said, most people have unfair judgment about Thanh Hoa people and think that they "eat pennywort, break sails" - stingy, wise and bad.
