ENTRY 3
IDENTIFYING BIAS

Item 1: The image

1.     Type of bias: Discrimination.

2.     Analysis:
The man and the woman in the picture are in the race to build their own career. The man’s running track doesn’t have any barriers; however, the woman’s one is full of obstacles, which shows the discrimination between them. They both are at the same starting point, but when they are in the process of getting a job, woman seem to always be treated in a less favorable way with less priority than man.

Item 2: An article: Vietnam sacks Falko Goetz after SEAGames loss

1.     Type of bias: Scapegoating

2.     Analysis:

The Vietnam football team’s poor performance at the 26th Seagames can be blamed on head coach Falko Goetz. However, there are also some factors that need to be taken into consideration such as: the mental health of the 2 teams, the ability of the teams, teams’ spirit or even the match fixing. Hence, Mr. Falko Goetz definitely can not be the only one to take responsibility for the team’s loss in Indonesia -> VFF’s decision is scapegoating.

Item 3:  Mad TV – Dominic The giant at work (video clip)

1.     Type of bias: Discrimination and assumption.

    2.     Analysis:

- When the first girl and the couple come in the store, they make fun of the guy. They snicker and tease him impolitely and rudely because he is super giant and different from the others. The first girl even compare him to monkey and the couple laugh at him intentionally -> Their actions are discrimination.
- When the beautiful girl comes in the store, the guy thinks that she will laugh at him like the previous people. Therefore, he tries to be rude to her after her greeting. However, she turns out to be gentle because she wants to apply for a job here -> The guy’s reaction to the girl is assumption. He comes to the conclusion that the girl will tease him only in accordance with his limited knowledge about the previous people.

  1. In item 2: I don't think that it is scapegoating. It is scapegoating if the head CG (in your example )has to be "taken responsibility for all the community's problem"
